Summer Reading

Summer is the perfect time for reading! Although our mental image of summer reading may be entertaining books, perhaps on a beach chair near the ocean, it can take different forms. Maybe you’re a student taking a summer class, filling your days with textbooks. Maybe you’re an adult who treasures this time for indulging in the latest philosophy or self-help or cooking book. You can also enjoy reading by helping with a summer reading program for youth. There are several local programs – including at Morrison Reeves Library (for adults, teens, and children), New Castle Henry County Public Library, or the Centerville Public Library. Poetry Reading

Do you like poetry? IU East has a great upcoming opportunity for you. Bianca Lynne Spriggs, an award-winning poet (2013 Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship in Poetry, several Artist Enrichment and Arts Meets Activism grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, and a nominee for the Pushcart Prize) will be coming to campus to read her work on Tuesday, March 24th. The event will be in the Whitewater Hall art gallery from 7-8 p.m., and is open to the public if you want to bring friends or family. September is National Literacy Month. Used in this context, literacy refers to the ability to read and write. Why does literacy have an entire month devoted to it on the national level? According to dosomething.org (https://www.dosomething.org/facts/11-facts-about-literacy-america) “1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read.” Appreciating the fact that you are able to read, and taking action to help others read is a great way to celebrate National Literacy Month. Right here at IU East, in the Center for Service-Learning (CSL), located in the Campus Library, we have lots of opportunities for you to help. The Art of Painting Fences (Or Getting Someone to Do It for You)

This year, the Ripple Effect is promoting Mark Twain’s classic novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer throughout the Wayne County community with plays, Tom Sawyer-themed Family Fun Nights, classroom visits, and more. And IU East is part of the action – on October 16th Dr. Steven Petersheim will be leading a marathon reading session in the library from 8:00 to 6:00. You can drop by anytime to read aloud or listen to others read, and participate in reliving all of Tom Sawyer’s classic adventures treasure hunting, whitewashing fences, and attending his own funeral.
