Service-Learning 101

The most frequently asked question by new students visiting the Service-Learning table at campus events is: “What is it?” Volunteering at local organizations?   A course requirement? An important part of many student organizations?   Yes- to each of these and much more! Service-Learning enters the student experience in many forms, in the most wonderfully meaningful ways.  IU East defines service-learning as “an active method of learning in which students engage in structured community service and reflect on the meaning of that service.” Learning through service and reflection- are the two equal and essential components that set service-learning apart from other educational experiences. Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment. Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others. Happy Birthday to Me, Esther W. For five years, IU East has been involved in the spirit of Connect, Create, Contribute, through our partnership with Friends Fellowship Community (FFC) for the Opening Minds through Art (OMA) program. We are pleased to announce that throughout June … Continued

This week’s blog features Ann Tobin, our campus/community liaison for the Center for Service-Learning. Ann creates community connections by engaging IU East students in service for course requirements, work study, career exploration, volunteerism, special projects, tutoring/mentoring, graduate school applications, and personal enrichment. She explains, “It’s all about relationships –those with the community partners and with the IU East students.” Answering needs of community organizations is a top priority, and many partners contact CSL with a need for service students. Answering the needs … Continued
