Nate Pendergraft is a recent Indiana University East graduate with light brown hair neatly combed to the side. His cowboy boots click on the tile floor as he walks. He leisurely stuffs his hands in his pockets as I study the rotational cases in the Community Room of the Wayne County Historical Museum, near downtown Richmond, Indiana. The cases’ display has been his personal project for several months, and now he’s one of the foremost experts on yet another crown jewel of Richmond’s history: Wayne Works. The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. These compatible missions have produced partnerships that benefit all involved. Since 2010, the IU East CSL has continuously increased service connections with CIS programs. Opening Minds through Art (OMA) is an innovative art-based program which connects students with elders with dementia and fosters communication, self-worth and social interaction through art projects. Beginning in the Fall 2015 semester, the IU East Center for Service Learning will be partnering with Friends Fellowship Community to present this groundbreaking service engagement program to IU East students and staff for the first time. OMA was developed by gerontologist and artist Like Lokon, who is currently director of the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University (Oxford, OH). She was motivated to create the OMA program after she spent eight years with nursing home residents, paying particular attention to the abilities retained by elders with dementia. The IU East Academic Outreach Summer Tutoring Program wrapped up this past week, with thirteen IU East students tutoring a total of 38 K-12 students for 165 hours. Completing 155 sessions over the course of eleven weeks, all registrants were accommodated, even those on the waitlist. All of the parents/guardians (21) that completed evaluations agreed that the summer tutoring program helped their child. Thirteen of the 21 parents agreed that their child understood the subject(s) better than before tutoring, with seven of these parents saying they couldn’t be sure until the school year started. All of the students but one who completed evaluations (22) agreed that their tutor helped them, and 17 out of 22 said they felt like they … Continued

New this summer is a tutoring program for K-12 youth in the Wayne County community. It is coordinated by Ann Tobin, campus/community liaison in the Center for Service-Learning, and IU East student Katelyn Brown, who initiated it for an Honors service project. IU East education faculty Denice Honaker provided literacy trainer for 14 IU East students serving as tutors. Representing a variety of majors, these college students help 30 young students gain an understanding of reading, math, and science. They are Kristina Kier, Dillon Hildebrand, Sarah Hensley, Hope Alexander, Hannah Castor, Hope Peer, Coty Barrett, Kaylyn Flora, Trevor Boram, Alex Estes, and Heather Rastbichler.
