FALCON provides the highest quality personal and professional development opportunities to part-time and associate faculty members from institutions of higher education around the world through networking, guest speakers, and expert panel discussions.     The Original Lilly Conference on College Teaching is one of the nation’s most renowned conferences presenting the scholarship of teaching and learning. Journals

The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is a effort to systematically increase our understanding of how students at the college level learn and what teaching strategies are most effective at promoting this learning. Below are some journals that would be good places to start SoTL research in your academic area.

Education and SoTL

  • Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning:
    Founded in 2001, the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (JoSoTL) is a forum for the dissemination of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in higher education for the community of teacher-scholars. Our peer reviewed Journal promotes SoTL investigations that are theory-based and supported by evidence. JoSoTL's objective is to publish articles that promote effective practices in teaching and learning and add to the knowledge base. The themes of the Journal reflect the breadth of interest in the pedagogy forum.
  • The Journal of Effective Teaching:
    The The Journal of Effective Teaching is a peer reviewed electronic journal devoted to the discussion of teaching excellence in colleges and universities. The Journal of Effective Teaching will publish two regular issues per year and possibly a special issue on a current topic. The regular issues will contain articles in two broad Content Areas: effective teaching and the scholarship of teaching. We invite contributors to share their insights in pedagogy, innovations in teaching and learning, and classroom experiences in the form of a scholarly communication.
  • New Directions for Teaching and Learning:
    Since 1980, New Directions for Teaching and Learning (NDTL) has brought a unique blend of theory, research, and practice to leaders in postsecondary education. NDTL sourcebooks strive not only for solid substance but also for timeliness, compactness, and accessibility.
  • Active Learning in Higher Education:
    Active Learning in Higher Education is an international, refereed publication for all those who teach and support learning in Higher Education and those who undertake or use research into effective learning, teaching and assessment in universities and colleges. The journal has an objective of improving the status of teaching and learning support as professional activity and embraces academic practice across all curriculum areas in higher education.
  • Teaching and Learning Inquiry:
    Published twice annually, TLI features original research and commentary on SoTL. TLI publishes insightful research, theory, commentary, and other scholarly works that document or facilitate investigations of teaching and learning in higher education. These may include empirical and interpretive investigations, theoretical analyses, thought-provoking essays, or works employing other genres.
  • American Educational Research Journal:
    The American Educational Research Journal (AERJ) is the flagship journal of AERA, with articles that advance the empirical, theoretical, and methodological understanding of education and learning. It publishes original peer-reviewed analyses spanning the field of education research across all subfields and disciplines and all levels of analysis, all levels of education throughout the life span and all forms of learning.Submissions reflect the highest quality in a wide range of perspectives, topics, contexts, and methods.
  • Educational Technology Research and Development:
    Educational Technology Research and Development is the only scholarly journal in the field focusing entirely on research and development in educational technology. The Research Section assigns highest priority in reviewing manuscripts to rigorous original quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods studies on topics relating to applications of technology or instructional design in educational settings.
  • Review of Research in Education:
    Review of Research in Education (RRE), published annually since 1973, provides an overview and descriptive analysis of selected topics of relevant research literature through critical and synthesizing essays. Articles are usually solicited for specific RRE issues. There may also be calls for papers. RRE promotes discussion and controversy about research problems in addition to pulling together and summarizing the work in a field.
  • Journal of the Learning Sciences:
    Journal of the Learning Sciences (JLS) is one of the two official journals of the International Society of the Learning Sciences ( www.isls.org). JLS provides a multidisciplinary forum for research on education and learning that informs theories of how people learn and the design of learning environments. It publishes research that elucidates processes of learning, and the ways in which technologies, instructional practices, and learning environments can be designed to support learning in different contexts.

Humanities & Social Sciences

  • Pedagogy: Critical Approaches to Teaching Literature, Language, Composition, and Culture:
    Pedagogy: Critical Approaches to Teaching Literature, Language, Composition, and Culture is an innovative journal that aims to build and sustain a vibrant discourse around teaching in English studies.In spite of the large role that teaching plays in the lives of most English studies scholars, no other mainstream journal in English devotes itself exclusively to pedagogical issues spanning the entire discipline.
  • Social Science Research:
    Social Science Research publishes papers devoted to quantitative social science research and methodology. The journal features articles that illustrate the use of quantitative methods to empirically test social science theory. The journal emphasizes research concerned with issues or methods that cut across traditional disciplinary lines.
  • Educational Technology and Society:
    Educational Technology & Society seeks academic articles on the issues affecting the developers of educational systems and educators who implement and manage such systems. The articles should discuss the perspectives of both communities and their relation to each other.
  • Arts and Humanities in Higher Education:
    Arts and Humanities in Higher Education is an international peer reviewed journal. It publishes articles, reviews and scholarly comment relating to the arts and humanities in higher education.
  • Journal of Criminal Justice Education:
    The Journal of Criminal Justice Education (JCJE) is an official publication of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). JCJE provides a forum for the examination, discussion and debate of a broad range of issues concerning post-secondary education in criminal justice, criminology and related areas. The aim of JCJE is to enhance the quality of higher education in criminal justice and criminology. JCJE is an education-oriented journal for those undertaking educational and academic endeavors in the fields of criminal justice and criminology. Quality articles that address specific educational or academic issues in these areas are encouraged and will be considered for publication.

  • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education:
    The aim of BAMBED is to enhance teacher preparation and student learning in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and related sciences such as Biophysics and Cell Biology, by promoting the world-wide dissemination of educational materials.
  • Journal of Chemical Education:
    The Journal of Chemical Education is the official journal of the Division of Chemical Education of the American Chemical Society, co-published with the American Chemical Society Publications Division. Launched in 1924, the Journal of Chemical Education is the world’s premier chemical education journal. The Journal publishes peer-reviewed articles and related information as a resource to those in the field of chemical education and to those institutions that serve them. JCE typically addresses chemical content, activities, laboratory experiments, instructional methods, and pedagogies.
  • Science Education:
    Science Education publishes original articles on the latest issues and trends occurring internationally in science curriculum, instruction, learning, policy and preparation of science teachers with the aim to advance our knowledge of science education theory and practice.
  • Journal of Research in Science Teaching:
    Journal of Research in Science Teaching, the official journal of NARST: A Worldwide Organization for Improving Science Teaching and Learning Through Research, publishes reports for science education researchers and practitioners on issues of science teaching and learning and science education policy. Scholarly manuscripts within the domain of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching include, but are not limited to, investigations employing qualitative, ethnographic, historical, survey, philosophical, or case study research approaches; position papers; policy perspectives; critical reviews of the literature; and comments and criticism.
  • CBE-Life Sciences Education:
    CBE—Life Sciences Education (LSE) is an online, quarterly journal owned and published by the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) in editorial partnership with the Genetics Society of America. The journal publishes original, previously unpublished, peer-reviewed articles on research and evaluation related to life sciences education, as well as articles about evidence-based biology instruction at all levels.

  • Journal of Nursing Education:
    The Journal of Nursing Education is a monthly, peer-reviewed journal publishing original articles and new ideas for nurse educators in various types and levels of nursing programs for over 50 years. The Journal enhances the teaching-learning process, promotes curriculum development, and stimulates creative innovation and research in nursing education.
  • Teaching and Learning in Nursing:
    Teaching and Learning in Nursing is the Official Journal of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing. The journal is dedicated to the advancement of Associate Degree Nursing education and practice, and promotes collaboration in charting the future of health care education and delivery.

  • Marketing Education Review:
    Marketing Education Review is a great resource for instructors to find innovative, assessment-driven tools and techniques to improve classroom instruction and the student learning experience. Its focus is to promote innovative approaches to curriculum design, student learning and faculty development.
  • Journal of Accounting Education:
    The Journal of Accounting Education (JAEd) is a refereed journal dedicated to promoting and publishing research on accounting education issues and to improving the quality of accounting education worldwide. The Journal provides a vehicle for making results of empirical studies available to educators and for exchanging ideas, instructional resources, and best practices that help improve accounting education.
