IU East announces Whitewater Valley Art Competition exhibit entrants

The annual Whitewater Valley Art Competition awards reception was held October 29 at Indiana University East. Originating in 1978 with open judging, the event has hosted prestigious artists and art experts of national acclaim for the jurying.   Of the 166 entered works, 43 were selected by Juror James Elkins, E.C. Chadbourne Professor in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Elkins determined the award winners. The exhibit will be on display in The Gallery and Meijer Artway now until December 4. The competition accepts entries from artists throughout a 300-mile radius around Richmond. IU East departments merge for mariachi with fun, educational trip to Chicago

What do you get when you put on a trip to Chicago that’s highlighted by a mariachi opera? You obviously get a lot of interest from departments at IU East. Eighty students and 20 faculty were bused there for a weekend trip that took wings by good fortune when Jessica Raposo, lecturer of music, heard about the unusual and brand-new opera. It all started with a simple brochure that Raposo received in the mail. She thought there would be interest from her music program, especially since the opera was so unique. First National Juried Art Exhibition Opens April 9

The Indiana University East Fine Arts program is hosting an inaugural national themed juried art exhibition, and the theme for this year is “Gender.” The exhibit will be open from April 9-June 19 in the Whitewater Hall Art Gallery. The juried art exhibit is supported by the IU East School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Diversity Commission. The exhibit coincides with the 27th Annual Indiana University Women’s and Gender Studies Undergraduate Conference being held at IU East April 9-10. IU East students create over 200 ceramic bowls for Empty Bowls Luncheon Nov. 15

Call them messages in a soup bowl. Students have been creating unique ceramic bowls by the dozens in the studio at Indiana University East. Hour by hour, over 200 pottery pieces have been thrown on the pottery wheel, fired, glazed and fired again.The last kiln was unloaded today (November 12) and now, the colorful finished products sit on shelves, awaiting a special IU East-sponsored luncheon event that will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 15. Indiana University East will present Alice Driver from 5-6 p.m. on Monday, September 22, in the Whitewater Hall Community Room. Driver, a photojournalist in Mexico, will present on her upcoming book More or Less Dead. She will also talk about her work as a photographer and as a documentary filmmaker. Her documentary film is If Images Could Fill Our Empty Spaces. The event is free and open to the public. The presentation is a part of Hispanic Heritage Month events at IU East.
