2015 Inaugural National Juried Art Exhibition: Gender

We would first like to thank the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Diversity Commission for their support in funding this important exhibition. We would also like to thank all the participating artists without whom this vision could not have come to fruition. This themed juried exhibition was planned by the IU East Fine Arts Program as part of an ongoing commitment to promote contemporary art practices, and the theme for its inaugural event was “Gender,” an issue that is ever so relevant today as it has ever been and something that affects everyone’s life experiences, both individually as well as a socially. We welcomed both traditional and innovative methods and interpretations of the theme, and believe the exhibition showcases a wide range of approaches. We had almost 160 submissions from which 40 were chosen for inclusion, representing 31 artists from 15 different states.

The Jurors

Ann B. Kim

Ann B. Kim is a maker and a teacher. Born in NJ, she grew up in Seoul, Los Angeles, and Southern Illinois, before moving to Northern California to pursue her college education. She received her BA in Art History and BFA in Art Practice from UC Berkeley, and holds an MFA in Studio Art with concentrations in Painting and Drawing from Mills College. She is currently residing in Dayton, OH and is an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University East in Richmond, IN. She has exhibited nationally and has been represented by Micaela Gallery in San Francisco, CA and Muse Gallery in Columbus, OH. She is also a recipient of numerous awards and grants including the Murphy & Cadogan Fellowship from the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Sarah Lewis Foundation Painting Scholarship.

Carrie Longley

Carrie Longley is a studio artist and educator. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University East. She holds a BA in Studio Art from Wittenberg University and MFA from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She exhibits her work extensively throughout the United States and has received numerous awards including “Emerging Craftsman” from Ohio Designer Craftsman, “The Bobby Kadis Award” at the Fenland School of Crafts, MCACD Individual Artist Fellowship, and the $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck “Young Sculptor’s Award.”

Ed Thornburg

Edward Thornburg graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Masters of Arts in Education from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He was fine arts teacher in Northeastern High and Elementary Schools (Fountain City, Indiana) for 35 years. He is currently Lecturer in Fine Arts and Curator of Exhibitions at Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana. He has won local and national awards for his works and his current art pursuits are “found art” and sculpture.

Kate Cunningham

Kate Cunningham is a lens-based artist, writer, and educator. Kate received a BFA in photography from Washington University in St. Louis, with time abroad at Goldsmiths College, University of London. She went on to obtain an MFA in photography from The University of Notre Dame, where she was awarded the Erfroymson Fund Emerging Artist Award. In 2011, she earned an MMus from the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague, the Netherlands having participated in an interdisciplinary program called ArtScience. Her curiosity about the world and passion for art making has lead to diverse experiences, from photographing girls’ schools in Cairo, Egypt to working on augmented reality with the prestigious V2_Institute for the Unstable Media in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Kate has exhibited and published both nationally and internationally. As an educator, Kate focuses on the process of developing artists as intellectuals, skilled in craft and conscious of the world around them. She has held Visiting Professor positions at The University of Notre Dame and at Purdue University, where she taught introductory through graduate students in photography, art history, and contemporary theory. Additionally, Kate brings her experience as Co-Founder of Stichting ArtScience, a foundation in the Hague, the Netherlands, with a mission to open dialogs that analytically and accessibly discuss the intersections between the arts, sciences, and technology. Currently, Kate teaches History of Photography for IUE and Digital Photography for Purdue University at Richmond. Kateis also the Drawing Center Coordinator for Manifest Creative Research Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
