Shared Responsibility Between Faculty and Students
At IU East, the partnership between faculty and students with disabilities plays a vital role in ensuring equitable access to the academic environment. A clear, shared understanding of expectations helps define each person’s responsibilities. Maintaining open and ongoing communication supports a smooth process for implementing accommodations, such as arranging testing through the Testing Center for extended time or reduced distraction environments, as well as coordinating excused absences related to disability or medical needs.
Supporting Students with Disabilities in the Classroom
At IU East, students with disabilities bring a wide range of experiences that may influence how they engage in the classroom. Each student has valuable insight into their own disability and, in many cases, extensive experience identifying strategies that support their success. When considering accommodations, instructors should take into account both the student’s physical access to the learning environment and their ability to fully participate in all course activities.
