Grade Requirements

Any course grade below a B will result in dismissal from the program. All field placements are pass/fail. In order to pass field experience courses, students must earn a minimum grade in associated methods courses, successfully complete field experience course work, and pass benchmark assessments (BPA/TPAS/edTPA).

Provisional Licensure

Candidates completing T2T programs meet all academic requirements for provisional licensure at the appropriate level in the state of Indiana. Refer to the Indiana CORE Assessments web page for additional information on tests that must be taken for licensure.

Persons with misdemeanor or felony convictions may not be eligible for licensure.

Admissions

Admission Requirements

• admission to IU East as a graduate student,
• a bachelor's degree granted by an institution with accreditation accepted by Indiana University East
• one of the following:
  • an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or greater;
  • a 2.5 undergraduate GPA and five years of professional experience pertinent to working within the K-12 developmental span;
  • a graduate degree with GPA of 3.0 or greater.
• College level coursework or demonstrable knowledge and experience in content areas taught by elementary teachers. Content areas for which general education coursework or knowledge must be documented include:
  1. math above college level algebra
  2. science with a lab
  3. English composition and literature
  4. social studies including United States History.

Students who elect to supplement their content area preparation above and beyond the 24 credit Elementary Transition to Teaching program will sign a program plan indicating that those supplemental courses were elective, prior to being admitted to the Transition to Teaching program.

How to Apply

Prospective students must Apply to IU East as a non-degree seeking graduate student, then submit the following application materials to Carla Bowen (cabowen@iue.edu):

1. Letter of Application - Should include a rationale for transitioning to a teaching career and briefly articulate relevant experience. The proposed area of licensure should be stated.
2. Two Letters of Recommendation - Letters should be sent directly from the person making the recommendation. Letters should be from persons who know the candidate well. Letters may not be from family members.
3. Official College Transcripts - Transcripts must be sent from the institution granting the degree or credit. If student is a graduate of Indiana University, then official transcripts are not necessary.
4. Current resume - Resume must include contact information for verification of prior experience.
5. Other documentation - Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide other materials which evidence the applicant's suitability for the teaching profession and prior experience with children. This component would also include any evidence submitted for consideration for possible required course reduction through Prior Learning Assessment.
