School of Natural Science & Mathematics (NSM)

Learn from expert faculty and hands-on experiences

The faculty and staff in the School of Natural Science and Mathematics are your partners in your journey to success.

We offer opportunities for hands-on learning, undergraduate research, and study abroad.

From atomic absorption spectrometry to polymerase chain reaction, our labs offer opportunities to engage with faculty in discovering the functions of genes in yeast, or in analyzing the impact of water quality of rivers in the Whitewater river shed.

Our math faculty engage students in studying challenging problems in differential equations.

And we offer a study abroad course at a research station in Costa Rica where you can participate in examining the breeding behavior of sea turtles.

The path to career success

Our school offers degrees in the biological and mathematical sciences.

Graduates of the biological sciences programs customize their path to prepare for medical school or other further education, or for careers in areas such as occupational therapy, conservation, or laboratory science.

Students who get a degree in mathematical sciences can pursue further study or be prepared for positions such as data analyst or actuary, among others.

Undergraduate programs

We offer degrees and programs in biochemistry, biology, human life science, mathematics, sustainability studies, and general studies.

The B.S. in Biological Sciences is a versatile degree that allows you to customize your coursework to fit your needs. You choose one of five concentrations:

This concentration is designed to provide you with the admissions requirements for medical school.

This concentration prepares you for other health-related careers such as occupational therapy or physical therapy.

If you would like to begin a career in conservation, this concentration is probably best for you.

This concentration is the application of biological principles (like DNA analysis, entomology, and serology) to solve crimes and provide evidence for the legal system.

The concentration in Medical Laboratory Sciences is offered in collaboration with Wright State University. Along with your bachelor’s degree, you will earn a certificate in Medical Laboratory Sciences and will be ready to start working in laboratories in hospitals.

We offer three separate programs in the mathematical sciences:

Provides you with preparation for a career as a data analyst or serves as a foundation for further studies in mathematics.

Focuses your mathematics skills on financial mathematics. You will learn how to use calculus and statistics to set insurance rates and calculate retirement benefits. The program prepares you for the first two professional exams of the Society of Actuaries. This degree allows for a seamless transition to the M.S. in Actuarial Science, and you can complete both degrees in just five years!

Prepares you for careers in collecting and analyzing data, designing surveys, and designing and performing experiments.

Graduate programs

We offer M.A.T. programs in mathematics, biology, and chemistry. These degrees are designated for in-service teaching and contain 18 graduate credit hours in the teaching discipline. This credential allows you to teach college-level courses at community colleges or high schools.

The M.S. in Actuarial Sciences prepares you for exams of the Society of Actuaries.
