IU East defines hazing as any conduct that subjects another person, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically, to anything that may endanger, abuse, degrade, or intimidate the person as a condition of association with a group or organization, regardless of the person’s consent or lack of consent. Such activities and situations include, but are not limited to:
- Physical injury, punishment, contact, exercise or sleep deprivation which causes excessive fatigue and/or physical and psychological shock;
- Coerced or forced consumption of food, drink, alcohol, tobacco, and/or illegal drugs;
- Coerced or forced transporting of individuals;
- Coerced or forced illegal acts;
- Personal servitude;
- Significant mental duress;
- Public humiliation, ridicule or indecent exposure as a condition of association with a group or organization;
- Sexual harassment.
It is the responsibility of every member of any group, team or association, and of any staff, faculty member or student to bring any incidents of hazing to the attention of the Dean of Students. For procedures governing incidents of hazing, please consult the sections on personal misconduct and misconduct by student organizations in IU East’s Procedures for the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct, especially Section IV.D Disciplinary Procedures for Personal Misconduct.
Sanctions for hazing may be imposed on individuals and/or groups, teams or associations collectively. If hazing occurs in connection with any team or individual initiation activity, disciplinary action may be taken by the unit, department or School as well as Indiana University East.
This policy is not intended to prohibit activities that are positive and educational in nature. Rather, the intent is to prevent those behaviors that are reasonably likely to cause danger, harm or significant mental duress to another student as a condition for association with a group or organization.
