Library General Behavior and Conduct Policy:
The Indiana University East Campus Library welcomes students, faculty, researchers, and visitors from across campus and beyond. Our diverse community engages in various activities within the library, reflecting the breadth of academic pursuits. Our aim is to maintain an environment conducive to the work of students and faculty while accommodating the needs of our community.
All library users are expected to:
- Respect others using the library.
- Avoid disruptive behavior such as damaging library property, distributing food or beverages, soliciting, bringing pets or non-service animals, using rollerblades/skates, bicycles/scooters, etc.
- Cease any disruptive activity if requested by library staff.
- Only post signs, posters, and flyers in designated areas.
Disruptive or Unlawful Behavior
The IU East Campus Library strives to foster a supportive environment for research, scholarship, teaching, and learning. We prioritize intellectual and academic freedom, safety, and privacy for our students, faculty, and staff. Library staff will work with individuals to resolve disruptions using a de-escalation approach. In cases of physical harm or threats, IUPD may be involved.
IU East Students, Faculty, & Staff
Library staff will collaborate with IU students, faculty, and staff to address behaviors that violate our general behavior and conduct policy. Our goal is to create a safe environment where all individuals and ideas are respected.
Unaffiliated Researchers and Visitors
Unaffiliated researchers and visitors must adhere to this policy. Those found violating the policy will be asked to cease disruptive behavior. Failure to comply may result in being asked to leave the library. In cases of refusal, the IUPD may be contacted for assistance.
Recommended Practices for All Library Users:
- Set cell phone ringers to vibrate.
- Speak in normal conversational tones.
- Do not leave personal electronics, textbooks, or belongings unattended. Unattended items will be sent to the university's lost and found.
- Cleanup workspace when leaving the library (i.e. return unneeded books to front counter, throw away trash, push in chairs).
- Avoid using open top beverage containers
Appropriate Use of Public Access Computers:
The IU East Campus Library adheres to IU's Appropriate Technology Use Policies. Users should not face restrictions or denials of access to digital resources and services based on their expression, receipt, creation, or participation in constitutionally protected speech. However, users should be considerate of others' needs and avoid offensive materials in public settings. If access is limited or denied due to behavioral or other grounds, users will receive formal
notification and avenues for appeal. Guest computer accounts and printing services are subject to library policies. During busy periods, time limits may be imposed on computer use, and priority may be given to IU East students, faculty, and staff. To receive a guest computer and/or printing account, please stop at the Circulation Desk.
Our policies align with the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and Access to Electronic Information, Services, and Networks. We regularly review and revise our policies to support our mission of intellectual discovery. Patrons are encouraged to direct any questions to the Library Director at liblearn@iu.edu.
