The School of Education is pleased to announce that 42 students have been inducted into the Teacher Education Program at Indiana University East.

Jerry Wilde, dean of the School of Education, said, “This is an important milestone in their careers.  To be inducted into the Teacher Education Program, these students have shown they have the requisite skills to take the next steps in their preparation.”

The School of Education offers a B.S. in Elementary Education degree and a B.S. in Secondary Education with concentrations in Mathematics, English, Science and Social Studies.

“We usually mark this accomplishment with a formal ceremony but that is not possible during a pandemic. Still, the faculty wanted the students to know how proud we are of their accomplishments up to this point,” Wilde said. “There is still a lot of hard work ahead.”

Wilde noted that there is a significant shortage of qualified teachers in the state of Indiana.

“We need these students to graduate and start their careers because there aren’t enough teachers to fill up the classrooms right now,” he said.

In addition to undergraduate programs, the School of Education also offers a Master of Science in Education, Graduate Certificates in Special Education and Early Childhood Education. The school also offers a Transition to Teaching program designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in an area other than education, but who would like to transition to a career in teaching.
