IU East’s small campus environment and access to the Indiana University system’s broader support structure, as well as its unique location, has attracted and kept Dr. Yu Kay Law happy. “I am able to have the close relationship with undergraduate students and the flexible teaching environment that allows for teaching innovations that would not have been possible elsewhere. In addition, I have been able to take advantage of IU’s supercomputing infrastructure, without which my research program would not have thrived more than ever before – and this access is unique for a faculty member teaching at a primarily undergraduate institution.”
He has enjoyed living in the region, which provides a range of different options. Richmond is a culturally rich small city that boasts a high quality civic theatre, excellent parks, and an amazing range of dining opportunities – so much that while he lives out of town he would often drive in on weekends to eat in Richmond. On the other hand, Richmond is within easy driving distance of Dayton, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati. These provide many different opportunities such as a range of different museums (many of which do not charge admissions), theatre and recreation opportunities, outdoor walking and recreation trails … not to mention a large, well-renowned international grocery store that stocks almost everything! “IU East sits at a location that truly makes it possible for me and my colleagues to have whatever living experience you want.”
As for the work environment, he cannot imagine a more flexible and open-minded place. “For faculty, the hierarchies and the chain of command structure are not half as rigid as in other places, and I have collaborated with faculty from other disciplines to collaborate in curriculum development. Colleagues have been most welcoming and helpful with providing support and advice, both academic and non-academic. Furthermore, I have been able to draw on colleagues from other IU campuses who have provided valuable advice and information over time, which has been useful for my career.”
